Next Island — tropical paradise planet in Entropia Universe

Game World Design — Entropia Universe

Next Island

Released December 2010 CryEngine 2 · Crytek Sandbox MindArk · Real-Cash-Economy MMO

Tropical beaches, lush landscapes, and time-travel adventure

Next Island was Entropia Universe's "paradise" planet — a world of tropical beaches, lush landscapes, and time-travel adventure, released in December 2010.

As Lead Designer I led the team of artists, animators, and world builders who designed and built the planet in Crytek's Sandbox (CryEngine 2), inside Entropia's real-cash-economy MMO.

Why it matters: a paradise that also has to function as a persistent, economy-driven game world means every beautiful vista is also a playable, buildable space.

The Paradise Planet

Next Island · CryEngine 2

A whole planet of tropical beaches and lush landscapes, designed and built by a team of artists, animators, and world builders inside Crytek's Sandbox.

Every location had to hold up as a place players live in — not just look at.

A Living Game World

Real-Time · Entropia Universe

Next Island ran inside Entropia's persistent, real-cash-economy MMO — a world that had to stay beautiful while players hunt, trade, and build in it.

The paradise look and the economy-driven design are the same set of decisions, made together.
