Blizzcon Protoss Look – Starcraft Stage Projection Mapping
In 2014, V Squared Labs hired me to design and animate the distinctive “Protoss” aesthetic for the Starcraft II stage at BlizzCon. This marked a significant project for me as the Starcraft stage stood out as the most expansive projection-mapped stage in my portfolio at the time, measuring an impressive 130 feet in width by 40 feet in height.
Despite receiving a wealth of assets from Blizzard, adapting game-based elements into a custom high-resolution stage design proved to be a formidable task. The need to commence design and modeling work from the ground up was inevitable. Furthermore, the juxtaposition of the organic qualities of the “Protoss” look with the rigid geometry of the stage added a layer of complexity to the creative process.
Blizzcon – Starcraft Stage Projection Mapping – Set Up
The 3D projection-mapped stage, located within the Anaheim Convention Center Arena, utilized a formidable array of twenty-four 26K projectors. Notably, this setup contributed to making it the second-largest projection-mapped stage in eSports history, boasting the highest pixel count. The sheer scale of the projection surface presented a unique challenge, and the demanding timeframe intensified the complexity of the project.
